MIT, and what it covers
BetterTranslator is published under the MIT License, Copyright (c) 2026 SZEINER s.r.o. It permits use, copying, modification, merging, publication, distribution, sublicensing and the sale of copies, on one condition: the copyright notice and the permission notice go into every copy or substantial portion of the software.
The same text supplies the software as is, without warranty of any kind, express or implied. That is the licence speaking about the software. Section 11 of the terms of use states the consumer rights that apply whatever a document on this site says.
The canonical text is the licence file in the repository: LICENSE.
That licence covers the repository's own code. Everything below reaches you under someone else's terms.
Hunspell notice
The application ships WeCantSpell.Hunspell, a C# port of Hunspell, and it carries Hunspell's own tri-licence. The licence text states Version: MPL 1.1/GPL 2.0/LGPL 2.1.
The Mozilla Public License 1.1 governs. The GPL and the LGPL are alternatives a recipient may elect instead, and BetterTranslator elects neither. The covered code is distributed under the MPL 1.1 terms of that tri-licence, which permit combining it with code under other terms in a larger work.
The library is used unmodified. One call site uses two published methods and no Hunspell source is altered, so there are no Modifications to publish under MPL 1.1 section 3.2.
The licence text and the source of the covered code:
- The licence text, reproduced verbatim in the repository
- The .NET port the application uses
- The original Hunspell project
This site does not host the application. The download control hands you a file published as a release asset in the repository above, beside the licence, this notice and the licence text. The notice is repeated here so that it reaches you before the transfer starts. See the releases.
What the application ships with
The restored dependency graph of the shipped projects holds 43 distinct packages. Four more build and test the application and are not distributed. Each package keeps its own terms, which apply to it instead of the licence above.
The identifiers those packages declare are MIT, Apache-2.0 and BSD-2-Clause, the zlib and libpng style GLFW licence for the GLFW binary, and the Hunspell tri-licence above. Nine OpenTK packages declare no identifier of their own and are components of the MIT licensed OpenTK 4.3.0, and one further OpenTK package declares its licence by address rather than by identifier.
Some of them carry prebuilt native binaries that are redistributed as they are rather than compiled from source: the Skia libraries, SQLite and GLFW.
Read the notices file, which lists every package, its version and its licence
Dictionaries and models are not bundled
Hunspell dictionaries are not distributed with the application. The dic and aff pair is supplied by whoever runs it, and the dictionary folder is created empty on first run. Dictionaries commonly carry licences of their own, frequently the GPL or the LGPL. Those terms apply to the dictionary you install, and the licence above does not extend to it.
Translation models are not distributed either. They are downloaded when you ask for one and carry their own licences from the people who publish them. The same holds for the native inference library, which is built out of tree.
This website's own components
This website is a separate program from the application, and it loads components of its own. They carry their own licence terms, which apply to them instead of the terms of this site. The licence is named beside each component in the table below, and its text is published by the project that supplies the component.
